Welcome to “Lee Han-Yeol Memorial Museum” Lee Han-Yeol entered Yonsei University as a Business Administration student in 1986. On June 9th 1987, as a 2nd year student, he took part in a protest in front of the main gate of Yonsei University and was hit by a tear-gas canister shot by the police. Wounded severely, he spent 27 days in the ICU of Severance Hospital, and passed away on July 5th. His funeral procession was held on July 9th where 1.6 million people joined. Since the 1960s, Korea had been under military dictatorship, and suffered severe oppression of freedom. Lee Han-Yeol’s injury during the protest triggered the June Democratic Uprising which was joined by more than 5 million people. His tragic death eventually brought forth democracy in South Korea and paved the way for the first direct presidential election for the first time in 16 years. In August of the same year, those who grieved his death established “Lee Han-Yeol Memorial Foundation”. The Foundation holds “Lee Han-Yeol Commemoration Ceremony” on June 9th, and a Memorial Service at his grave located in Mangwol-dong, Gwangju, on July 5th every year. Also, “Lee Han-Yeol Scholarship Project” has granted more than 200 million Korean Won to over 170 students as of June 2018. In addition, the Project jointly hosts “Lee Han-Yeol Literary Award” with Yonsei University’s school magazine “Establishing of the Memorial Museum is to keep the promise to remember the will of the martyr. It is to look back on where we had started by joining our scattered hands together. It is to pass down the history of democracy to the next generations who seek for directions in their lives.” The Memorial Museum was founded in 2004 with both the government reparations made to the Lee’s family and voluntary contribution of citizens, and it reopened as a private museum in 2014. The Museum exhibits and studies the archives of the June Democratic Uprising, and now serves an educational role for the history of democracy in Korea. Every June, it stages Special Exhibition commemorating Lee Han-Yeol and the June Democratic Uprising, and since 2015, it also holds “Unforgettable Faces Exhibition” every October to honor other martyrs for democracy. Lee Han-Yeol Memorial Museum will continue to hold accessible and meaningful exhibitions. Thank you for visiting us. |
